Jake and son Colin on Mt. Katahdin over looking the knifes edge

Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian trail. The most difficult non-technical climb in the east. The most spectacular route is the mile long "Knife Edge" which combines 2,000 foot drops on either side of the trail.
Baxter State Park has a very restricted access. Electronic devices such as cell phones are strictly forbidden. Be sure to book camp sites months in advance. Day hikers need to show up at the gate as early as 06:00 in the summer as the gate is closed when the daily climbing quota is filled.
